All of the following search tools have been developed to help students search the web for safe, authoritative, and accurate information. Many of them were created by librarians. All of them are free.

Grade Level

Description

Elementary

KidsKonnect Created by a retired elementary school teacher to provide access to curriculum-based, safe web sites.

K through 7

Ask for kids Formerly known as Ask Jeeves, Ask for Kids' editorial board searches for web sites appropriate for children and filters results. Searching is kid-friendly; however, advertising is rampant.

K through 12

Kigose A search engine designed for education, Kigose includes only public web sites suggested by students, teachers and parents. Search for images, songs, games, videos and more.

Middle school and high school

Finding Dulcinea Provides a narrative overview of the search topic along with with links to credible, trustworthy web sites. Guides to the Internet and Internet searching help students understand the search process.
Dogpile The best combined results of  Google, Yahoo!Search, Ask.com, and Bing, most relevant to your search term with duplicates omitted. Provides fewer, but better results.
Clusty Combines the results of several major search engines, and groups similar results into clusters with headings, allowing the user to choose the most relevant sites.

High School and College

Infomine Built by librarians at four major universities, Infomine provides organized access to college level research and information on the Internet. For more advanced students; read the how-to page to learn the best way to search.
